LAGUNA BEACH – Impractical parking regulations and a lack of larger anchor stores may be hurting local businesses, a city councilmember said in an agenda item.
The City Council will take a look at revising its downtown specific plan at its annual joint meeting with the Planning Commission Saturday. The council will also meet with the Design Review Board.
Also on the agenda:The plan was originally adopted in 1989 and contains policies such as maintaining village character and the city's identity as an art colony. Councilman Kelly Boyd is asking city officials look at how the plan can be revised to address issues including the growing number of vacant stores, lack of resident-serving businesses and difficulty for property owners to add second stories. Boyd, who owns the Marine Room Tavern downtown, added the report from the Business Task Force should also be taken into consideration.
•The Council and Planning Commission will review and prioritize special projects.
•The Council and Design Review Board will discuss general plan policies.
•The Council and Design Review Board will discuss the workability of the department contact management system.
•The Council and Design Review Board will discuss the need for an alternate member of the design review board.
The Planning Commission and City Council will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the community room of the Susi Q Senior and Community Center at 380 Third Street. The Council will then meet with members of the Design Review Board at 10:30 a.m.
